Jimmy Choo designs tribute Iris Apfel stiletto with FIVE-inch heels but will the 91-year-old fashion maven even wear them?
She's has been hailed as a fashion icon; a purveyor of the most eclectic, chaotic and impressively wacky style choices and now Iris Apfel has been honoured by Jimmy Choo.
The shoe legend has designed a hand-woven leather sandal that is called the Iris shoe, as a tribute to the woman refered to as 'the grand dame of idiosyncratic fashion'.
And yet, with towering five inch stiletto heels, they are just the kind of shoes that the 91-year-old New Yorker abhors and will most likely never wear.
Famously outspoken and never one to shy away from voicing her disdain for the fashion faux pas committed by today's fashionistas, she spoke with WWD last month about the latest trend she found disagreeable.
Mrs Apfel opined: 'Those big platforms and insanely high heels. They look like an orthopedist's delight. I don't see anything beautiful about them.'
Though Mrs Apfel is indeed lauded for her love of bright red lipstick and chunky bold jewellery, it is questionable whether the vivid ornaments and tassels will go down well with a lady who prefers 'clean-looking' shoes.
'I don't mind if a shoe is embellished,' she has been reported as saying, 'but it has to be well designed. Manolo's shoes seem perfectly designed. He knows what he's doing. And there's nothing that beats a classic pump.'
She may however warm to the rest of the range, conceived by Jimmy Choo Creative Directors, Sandra Choi and Simon Holloway, as it includes a flat version of the sandal and a the Xara, a fringed bag.
The creative duo spoke about Mrs Apfel's 'maximalist style and bold layering of tribal and ethnic jewellery' as inspiration for their design process and called her 'the doyenne of ethnic embellishment'.
Recently her bombastic taste for colour and vitality inspired a collaboration with MAC which included a teal green Robin’s Egg eyeshadow and a Toco Toucan nail polish.
