Mad Men Season 5 Episode 3- So She's Just Fat?

When January Jones announced that she was pregnant with her first child, I figured they would just make her character pregnant as well, especially since she is remarried. Her character wasn't on the first episode, but last night January Jones returned to Mad Men looking a little heavier and rounder - and the subject of a dramatic storyline.

Weight gain: January Jones returned to Mad Men last night as the beautiful ice-queen Betty Draper - but was shown looking rounder in the face as bosses covered her real-life pregnancy

Fans of the show knew she was pregnant so were expecting to see a change in her appearance as she looked much rounder in the face than usual.
But what they probably weren't expecting was the shocking storyline that writers are using to cover her pregnancy - which they are passing off as a tumor.

Clever costume department: Betty's oversized pink quilted dressing gown concealed Jones's pregnancy

Eating for two: Betty is seen in a scene lounging on the sofa and tucking int ice cream munching on crisps which might explain her weight gain

Betty, played by Jones, returned to the drama last night having been absent from the previous two episodes. Although they managed to conceal her bump with clever camera angles that didn't go any lower than her chest, the episode, which was directed by Jon Hamm who plays her ex-husband Don Draper, focused on her significant weight gain.

I need some help: Betty goes to her doctor for some weight loss pills....

Thinking she was getting fat, Betty goes to the doctor to see if he will prescribe her some weight-loss pills.
But the doctor reveals that she has a tumour in her thyroid, which explains the weight gain, but also leaves Betty in fear for her life.

You're not fat... you've got a tumour: The doctor examines Betty and tells her she has a growth on her thyroid...

The typically-cold and hard Betty crumbles and calls Don to discuss her fears about dying and leaving their three children without a mother.
But as soon as the tumour turns out to be benign, Betty is back to her hard, sharp-tongued self again.

Sharing her fears: Betty confides in a friend after a trip to the doctor

So I'm just fat then? Betty looks delighted when she is told that the tumour is benign

Body double? January Jones steps out of the bath showing off a fuller figure after her maternity leave

And he response to finding out she didn't have cancer? 'It's nice to be put through the ringer and find out I'm just fat.'
January didn't gain much weight while she was pregnant so bosses had to resort to make-up tricks - the same ones they used on on Elisabeth Moss during Peggy's pregnancy late in season one.

Relief: Betty kisses her second husband Henry

Having a soak: January's pregnancy was covered by strategically placed camera angles and with special make-up
